Most Popular Words in Video Game Titles
You knew it was coming, didn’t you? After our posts on popular words in music and common words in film titles (and movie tag lines), it was inevitable that we’d eventually cover common words in the titles of video games. So here it is. We like being predictable. Well, not too predictable. Squid balloon.
We took the data from VGChartz list of 7891 top-selling video games, and analyzed not only the most common words, but also the most common first words of video games – there is, of course, some correlation.
Eerily, if you take the most common seven words in video games titles, and put them in order of popularity, it actually creates a fairly good game title: The Super NBA Dragon Star World Final. I bet that would be a global hit.
and…

For the record, I would also love to play “The Super NBA Dragon Star”. Just sayin.
So do we think the names have an impact on game popularity? Or do the best game makers choose wisely?
I’d say “Dragon” is listed solely due to the ridiculous amounts of Dragon Ball games pumped out each year. To put that into perspective, there’s more Dragon Ball games than Mario games… NOT including the period between 1985-2001 before they were pumped out several times or more a year.
