Most Common Words in Movie Titles, By Genre

Following our previous posts (Most Common Words in Album Names and Most Common Words in Movie Tag Lines) we thought it only right to apply the same analysis to movie titles. So that’s what we did, using data from IMDB.

From this analysis, we see that a cliched title for a love movie would be “It’s Romance Night for Girl and Man Love”, for sci-fi “Space Man and the Star Time Alien”, and for adult… well, let’s not get into that. I was initially happy to see the word ‘love’ in the adult top 10 words. “That’s nice”, I thought. But then I realised that ‘love’ in this context is a synonym for ‘really enjoy’ (e.g. “Girls that Love Big Graphs” – I made that up, but you get the idea), rather than the more romantic meaning.

For those who are wondering, the reason that ‘bondage’ is the second highest word in the Adventure genre is that movies can be classified by multiple genres, and a lot of adult films (of which there are many) are also classified as ‘adventure’.

That’s hilarious. And there are still plausible title combinations in those words: “Blood House”, for example, or “Lost on Star Island”.
