Leonard Cohen and N-Dubz Lyrics: Comparing Songwriters Between Generations

April 16, 2010

Most people would agree that the best songwriters of their respective generations are Leonard Cohen and N-Dubz.

We decided to take a popular song from each artist, and run a quick analysis of the lyrics, to allow a more scientific comparison of the similarities between these poets. For Leonard Cohen, we chose Sisters of Mercy, which includes the haunting refrain:

If your life is a leaf that the seasons tear off and condemn
They will bind you with love that is graceful and green as a stem

For N-Dubz, we chose the modern classic I Need You, featuring the tear-jerking prose:

I been searchin’ all over Facebook,
and I can’t seem to find you

To make linguistic analysis easier, we treated each line of the lyrics as a new sentence, and ran the lyrics through text-analysis algorithms. The result is a number of readability scores, measuring the complexity of each text. This is a little tough on the lyrics, as the software is designed to analyse paragraphs of text, rather than the shorter sentence style and monosyllabic nature of song lyrics.

An analysis of the text from Green Eggs and Ham by Dr Seuss is included for a base comparison.
